Eritrea's People
Four-fifths of Eritreans are Tigrinya and Tigre, who speak related Semitic languages. The rest of the population are Kunama, Afar and Saho. Tigrinya and Arabic are the principal languages used in commerce. English is widely spoken in the cities and is used for secondary and university education. 58.6 percent of the population above the age of 15 can read and write. In general, Christians live in the highland regions while Muslims and followers of traditional beliefs live in the lowlands. Eritrea also has a sizable population of Italian Eritreans - either Eritrean-born descendants of Italian settlers or long-term Italian residents who have relocated to the country, which once was an Italian colony. Many of them live in the capitol city of Asmara, which is widely known for its colonial architecture and cultural remnants of colonialism.
